Instructions For Prospective Authors:

Content:
The article submitted should be of the type usually published in the statistical literature. It may be about research, a novel teaching method, or even a well thought out philosophical approach. It must not be used as a pulpit for a religious or political doctrine or the like.

If the article is "put under a cloud" then it will be made unavailable for downloading. An article can be put "under a cloud" if someone claims that the article is plagiarized, in violation of someone's copyright, or libelous in any way. It will then be the authors responsibility to resolve the problem.

Style:
InterStat does not impose any style requirements, as long as the article is easily readable by our readers. A poorly written article will probably not be accepted by the editor, who is the sole judge of the articles readability. Note: Many authors use editors to correct small typographical and spelling errors. Your article will not be changed in any way. The file which viewers download will be the exact file you submit. It is your responsibility to correct small errors before submitting the article. Although viewers may appreciate your work, a poorly written article will reflect poorly on you.

Copyright:
InterStat does not copyright its contents. Thus an author is free to submit the article elsewhere. Of course, an article which has already appeared in a copyrighted publication may not be submitted for publication in InterStat.

Abstract:
The abstract will be viewed before the article is downloaded. There are definite guidelines for the abstract. The abstract for InterStat may or may not be the same as in the article. The abstract must follow the guidelines given below.

1. The material discussed here must be submitted as a text (.txt) or a word (.doc) file.
2. Use both capital and lower case letters.
3. The first line (extended if needed) should contain the articles title.
4. The next line should contain the word "by" followed by the authors names separated by commas. Names should be in the form First Middle Last. No affiliation should be given. ( Affiliation should appear in the paper itself. )
5. The next line should start with the word "Abstract:" with the abstract continuing on the same line.
6. The next line or lines should be a list of key words. Start with the words "Key Words:" and continue on the same line, separating the key words with commas.
7. The next line or lines (one per author) should be the authors name ( First Middle Last) followed by his/her e-mail address. Start with the word Author(s):
8. The next line should start with the word "Editor:" followed by the name of the editor (First Middle Last) to whom the article was submitted, followed by his/her e-mail address.

Example of an Abstract File:

The Use of Linear Regression Techniques in Analyzing Chaotic Time Series
by John W. Smith and Philip M. Jones.
Abstract: Linear Regression is used, first, to find the trend in a time series. Once this trend is eliminated, then other Linear Regression techniques are used to decode the residuals.
Several examples are given to show how well the method works for predicting stock prices.
Key Words: Linear Regression, Chaos, Time Series, Economic Prediction
Authors:
John W. Smith, jwsmith@vt.edu
Philip M. Jones, pmjones@stat.unc.edu
Editor: Peter C. Flick, flick@soso.edu

(Important Note: Before making a final choice of an editor, contact the editor you want, by e-mail, and make sure that he/she is available.)

Preparing The Files:
The article must be submitted as a postscript (.ps) file or as a pdf (.pdf) file. Creating a .ps file is easy to do. Tell your computer that you have a postscript printer ( you do not need to have one) and direct the printer output to a file. This can be done from most any word processor.

The Abstract must be in text (.txt) format.

Name these files with your initials and three digits ( so your files will be distinct ). For example, John W. Smith might have files jws237.ps and jws237.txt. Note that both files have the same name with different extensions. Do not send revisions with the exact same name as the origional since the second file wil erase the first file.

Submitting The Files:
The author must e-mail the files to

InterStat@vt.edu
